Today Cantão is known as one of the most significant protected areas in the Brazilian Amazon. Cantão is the last remaining refuge for endangered species like the giant otter and the dwindling populations of the Araguaia River Dolphin. The surrounding Cerrado, the richest savannah in the world, has been incinerated for soy, and the Instituto’s efforts have helped local land owners understand the importance of preserving watersheds from pesticide contamination. Purchasing land to be conserved, the Instituto’s own example has inspired others to create Privately Protected Areas as buffer zones for the park. To welcome visitors, Instituto Araguaia expanded the trails within its Privately Protected Areas (PPAs) and fully equipped its visitor center. We also built scenic observation decks overlooking one of the PPA lakes and acquired a boat with a silent motor to minimize environmental impact.
