Today the park is known as one of the most significant protected areas in the Brazilian Amazon, ranking among the best managed parks in Brazil by the WWF/World Bank’s Amazon Protected Areas Program -ARPA. Cantão Park is the last remaining refuge for endangered species like the giant otter and the dwindling populations of the Araguaia River Dolphin. The surrounding Cerrado, the richest savannah in the world, has been incinerated for soy, and the Instituto’s efforts have helped local land owners understand the importance of preserving watersheds from pesticide contamination. Purchasing land to be conserved, the Instituto’s own example has inspired others to create Private Reserves as buffer zones for the park.
